OPAL: Transforming Playtimes at Oaklands

At Oaklands, we believe that play is an essential part of every child's development. That is why we are proud to follow the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach, which aims to make playtimes more exciting, inclusive and engaging for all children.

OPAL is based on the understanding that children learn valuable life skills through play. By providing a wider range of opportunities outdoors, children can develop creativity, problem-solving skills, resilience, teamwork and confidence while having fun with their friends.

Rather than relying solely on traditional playground equipment, the OPAL approach encourages children to use a variety of loose parts and natural resources to create, build, imagine and explore. Whether they are constructing dens, designing games, creating imaginative worlds or working together on a project, children are given the freedom to take ownership of their play in a safe and supportive environment.

Through OPAL, our playtimes become richer experiences that support children's physical, social and emotional wellbeing. We are committed to ensuring that every child has access to high-quality play opportunities and leaves the playground with happy memories, new friendships and valuable skills that will support them throughout their lives.

We are excited to continue developing our outdoor environment and look forward to sharing our OPAL journey with our school community.

"Every child deserves amazing play opportunities every day."
