History
Oaklands focus - to understand the legacy of the past on modern Britain and know how historians can learn more.
Our history curriculum overview clearly shows the national curriculum coverage for each year. It is organised into topics that build on each other and are driven by an enquiry question. History content has been chosen in order to cover the national curriculum, but also to celebrate the contributions of a diverse group of leaders and ensure that children can celebrate and understand their own cultural heritage. Each unit has been written by staff following the Oaklands SOLO planning format and is revised annually and increased in challenge as the children progress. The children also extend their knowledge of history in their guided reading lessons and they rehearse and practice their core knowledge by using it in their writing. There are also opportunities for spaced practice of this knowledge in guided reading sessions later in the year.
The progression of history knowledge is assessed formatively through child and teacher evaluation of clear learning objectives for each lesson and a final summative “mastery” task at the end of each unit.
