Geography
Oaklands focus - to understand the physical world and how humans interact with it so we can sustain our planet.
Our geography curriculum focuses on developing our children’s knowledge of the physical and human world. We have chosen topics that focus on ensuring their understanding and pride in their local area and their own cultural heritage. Each curriculum unit is driven by a key enquiry question and uses the Oaklands SOLO planning format. The key countries studied relate to places of cultural significance for our cohort. In addition we augment some units with references to sustainability and respecting the earth as this is one of our core values.
As the pandemic prevented local area trips and the shared use of resources such as maps in class we have added in additional units on the local area and map work in order to catch up. The children also extend their knowledge of geography in their guided reading lessons and they rehearse and practice their core knowledge by using it in their writing. There are also opportunities for spaced practice of this knowledge in guided reading sessions later in the year.
The progression of geography knowledge is assessed formatively through child and teacher evaluation of clear learning objectives for each lesson and a final summative “mastery” task at the end of each unit.
